Why do I need to have my teeth professionally cleaned?

June 17, 2009 06:53 by Admin

I brush my teeth every day and have done so for 30 years... in fact some days twice!

Why should I get my teeth cleaned by a dentist?

Hi Suchi,
         Thankyou for your question.
The causes of the yellow patches in your teeth have to be determined first before any procedures are prescribed to remove them.
If the teeth were not like this when they first came through the gum when you were young, and the stained patches are superficial and were the result from coffee drinking and or smoking etc, then a good cleaning, scaling and polishing by visiting the dentist should be sufficient.
However, if the patches are ingrained in the enamal, the procedures required can be a bit more complicated.
Bleaching may not be considered as the results are too unpredictable and may even be worse.
Some smaller patches may be "dug" out and filled with composite.
In more severe cases, the problems can probably only be solved by laminated or porcelain veneer.

We all clean our teeth. We might make every effort, with our brushing and flossing to daily remove plaque from our teeth and gums. Most of the time we can remove some of the plaque. However there are some hard-to-reach areas that are difficult to get to, in which case, there will be build-ups. If plaque has been left on a tooth for a day or two it becomes hardened by the minerals in your saliva. Gradually this plaque tartar builds up and is called calculus. Calculus is very hard, removing it is no longer a job for your toothbrush, you need the professional help of a Dentist or Dental Hygienist.

My teeth are stained because I was given tetracycline when I was small.  Would a proper professional cleaning remove these stains?

Unfortunately, the tetracycline caused discoloration (or stain as you called it) are within the teeth and are not removable by simple means including professionally cleaned by the dentist.
Bleaching may or may not give you the desired result if you are looking for the 'Hollywood' type of pearly white teeth. Various types of veneers are usually the only way to enable you to get the teeth looking white again. You can view information on veneers at www.dentistbondisydney.com.au/t-crownsveneers.aspx
